Last chance to send your nominations for the SECAC Board in by March 10, 2024.
Please read Al Denyer, SECAC 1st Vice President's email below.
Rebecca
Dear SECAC Members,
A vibrant, engaged board is essential to SECAC's continued growth and success—as well as
its relevance as a professional organization that serves all of us. I invite you to nominate
yourself or a colleague to run as a candidate in the upcoming SECAC Board of Directors
election. Nominations are due on March 10, 2024. State and At-Large directors serve a
three-year term and these terms begin immediately following the conclusion of the election in
July.
The Board seats subject to election this year are listed here:
i. Alabama: Tony Bingham, completing 1st term, eligible for 2nd term
ii. Kentucky: Miriam Kienle, completing 1st term, eligible for 2nd term
iii. Louisiana: Ashley Busby, running for 1st term, (Ashley was a Presidential Nomination in
2022 to fill a partial term and is therefore eligible to run for 1st term).
iv. North Carolina: Kathryn Shields, completing 2nd and final term (thank you for your
service, Kathryn!)
v. At-Large #3 (Northeast region): Claire Kovacs, completing 2nd and final term (thank
you for your service, Claire!)
(At-large candidates must reside/work in a state not represented by a director elected
specifically to represent it. The “Northeast region” is defined in the SECAC Constitution as
CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT, and Washington, D.C.)
Please give careful considerations to your SECAC-member colleagues in the eligible states
and at-large position and nominate any of them you think would be an asset to the
organization. In making your nomination, please consider dedicated members who would
bring greater diversity to our Board. Self-nominations are also welcome and encouraged!
You may send your nominations to me at a.denyer@utah.edu along with confirmation that
the nominee is willing to stand for election. After the nomination period closes, I will be in
touch with candidates to collect current CVs and 200-word bios to prepare the election ballot.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the nomination or election
processes or the duties of State Directors.
Best wishes,
Al Denyer

Conference at a Glance:
Dates: October 23 – 26, 2024
Venue: Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center
Call for Papers: March 4 – May 1, 2024
Conference web page: https://secacart.org/page/Atlanta2024
Under the guiding theme of Wayfinding, SECAC 2024 will be designed by artists, designers, scholars, and educators from across the Atlanta region. Wayfinding, a term originally coined in the realms of environmental design and navigation, has evolved into a generative concept that extends far beyond physical spaces. Our conference seeks to unravel the intricacies of wayfinding across intersections of technology, cognition, culture, and design. Through presentations, discussions, exhibitions, and more, we will consider the nuanced ways in which we navigate intellectual and creative landscapes.
This year, each applicant may submit proposals to two sessions, but may only present once at the conference. Final placements will be made by the session chairs and conference director and will be communicated to presenters by June 1, 2024.
Current SECAC Membership is required within ten days of acceptance; membership and conference registration are separate fees.
Sessions will be scheduled between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on Thursday 10/24, Friday 10/25, and Saturday 10/26. All presentations must be given in person; virtual presentations are not available unless required for health reasons, and virtual presenters must be fully registered for the conference. Sessions will not be broadcast or recorded.
We look forward to seeing you in Atlanta in October!
Best,
Dr. Tracy Stonestreet

Latest Issue for Art Inquiries has Emerged! (1/10/24, 8am)
SECAC Members,
We are happy to announce that the latest issue (Volume XVIII Number 4 2023) of Art
Inquiries is now available in its fully digital, open-access format, on the site hosted by
Virginia Commonwealth University’s “Scholar’s Compass” publishing platform. Each
article as well as the entire issue may be downloaded from the site:
https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/artinquiries_secacart/.
This new platform will not only streamline much of the editorial process but also
increase the journal’s accessibility and visibility. The open-access format, moreover,
means a wider reach in terms of readership and impact factors as well as an array of
diagnostic metrics, made possible by Digital Commons, that should prove useful for
authors.
We also look forward to receiving future submissions of feature-length articles, through
the VCU platform, for upcoming issues of the journal. Submissions are accepted on a
rolling basis.
If you have any questions about the site's functionality, feel free to reach out to Editor-in-
Chief Mysoon Rizk (mysoon.rizk@utoledo.edu).

2024 SECAC Call for Sessions is open! (12/15/23, 7am)
The Call for Sessions for SECAC 2024 is now open!
We are celebrating our 80th Conference Year of SECAC!
Conference Dates: October 23 - 26, 2024
Venue: Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel & Conference Center, Atlanta, GA
Under the guiding theme of Wayfinding, SECAC 2024 will be designed by artists, scholars, designers, and educators from across the Atlanta region. Wayfinding, a term originally coined to describe modes of environmental design and navigation, is evoked here as a generative concept that extends far beyond physical spaces. Our conference seeks to unravel the intricacies of wayfinding across intersections of technology, cognition, culture, and design. Through presentations, discussions, exhibitions, and more, we will consider the nuanced ways we navigate intellectual and creative landscapes.
Sessions may take various forms, including but not limited to the following: a collection of presenters selected from the call for papers; a panel of pre-selected speakers curated by the chair; a round table discussion between invited speakers and the audience. Other creative approaches to the session format are also welcome. Each prospective chair or co-chair may submit only one proposal; each conference participant may chair one session and may present one paper. Undergraduate students are not permitted to serve as session chairs. If you plan to present at the same session for which you are serving as chair, you must submit an abstract during the call for papers open period, scheduled for March 1 – May 1, 2024.

Update Regarding SECAC Membership Rates (12/1/23, 9am)
Dear Members of the SECAC Community,
I’m writing to share an update concerning an upcoming change to SECAC membership rates that will take effect January 1, 2024. This October, the SECAC Board recommended that the organization strategically raise membership rates for individual and institutional members. This recommendation was presented for a vote at the annual Member Business Meeting on October 14, 2023, and approved unanimously by those members present. With this change, the cost of annual individual membership will increase to $100 and annual institutional membership will increase to $200.
Our primary goal in implementing this strategic increase is to ensure that SECAC remains on solid financial footing in the future. Membership dues support the organization's basic operating expenses as well as key membership programs, including the publication of Art Inquiries and the SECAC Artist’s Fellowship. As we’re all aware, the cost of goods and services have increased significantly over the last few years. SECAC has certainly felt this change acutely.
SECAC has always endeavored to be a welcoming professional organization with membership rates that are affordable for all members. With this key element of our mission in mind, I want to emphasize that membership rates will not increase for our student, adjunct/independent, and retired members.
I’d like to close this message by sharing my gratitude for your dedication to SECAC. Your engagement and support ensure that SECAC will continue to be a thriving professional community for years to come. In the coming weeks, please be on the lookout for a member satisfaction survey. We want to hear from you, and your feedback will help us shape the organization’s future.
With appreciation,
Carly Phinizy
SECAC President

REMINDER: Levin Awards application is open through August 31, 2023 (8/15/23, 4:25pm)
Just a reminder that our William R. Levin Awards for Research in the History of Art are still accepting applications! Details about this award are below.
Thanks to the generosity of William R. Levin, Professor Emeritus at Centre College, Danville, KY, SECAC offers two awards of a minimum amount of $5,000 each, to art historians who are members of the SECAC organization. Dr. Levin has been a member of SECAC since 1987; served on the Board of Directors; published in the scholarly journal The Southeastern College Art Conference Review (now Art Inquiries); received the SECAC Award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication in 2004; and been recognized with three of the organization’s highest honors: the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010, the Exemplary Achievement Award in 2010, and the Award for Service to the Arts in 2020.
Dr. Levin endowed the first award in 2013 to encourage and recognize research in art history; his generous gift in 2018 endowed a second award. The first of these awards supports Research in the History of Art Before 1750; the second is now designated to support Research in the History of Art Since 1750.
Applicants may be established scholars or those newer to the field, although generally these are post-doctoral awards, and are not intended to support finishing MA theses or PhD dissertations. Applicants are welcome to propose one project each year that may be in the planning stage or partially realized. The purpose of these awards is to enable recipients to carry forward work toward the completion of the proposed project likely resulting in publication. Funds may be used for travel, supplies, fees, or other purposes. Preference will be given to those projects that involve a significant research component, rather than those in which most of the award would be spent on permissions or editorial assistance.
Any member of SECAC may apply. SECAC membership must be current at the time of application and at the time of the use of the funds. Recipients must wait three years before re-applying.
Responsibility of Recipients
No restrictions are made by SECAC on how the award funds are expended. Conference papers and publications based on the project are encouraged. SECAC requests that winners provide a brief report to the board describing how the funds were spent within one year from receipt of the award money. Award recipients should acknowledge the William R. Levin Award for Research in the History of Art by its full name in any resulting publications.
For details on how to apply, please visit:
Research in Art History - SECAC (secacart.org)
Applications will be accepted through August 31, 2023.
Questions on applying? Please contact our Levin Award Chair, Sarah Archino at saraharchino@gmail.com.

SECAC Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Awards application NOW OPEN! (7/20/23, 8:30am)
In an effort to increase diversity of presenters and participants and to recognize the exceptional work of those who are historically underrepresented in SECAC, higher education, and arts institutions, SECAC established our annual Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) awards in 2020.
EDI awards cover the cost of conference registration, SECAC membership for two years, and a $200 honorarium to help cover travel and accommodations for five selected awardees. One of the five EDI awards is earmarked for a first-time SECAC attendee.
The qualifications for this award are as follows:
* Those who have been underrepresented in their field for any reason, but especially due to race are welcomed to apply.
* Preference given to SECAC 2023 selected conference session chairs, presenters, or juried exhibition artists.
Please note that applicants applying under the first-time SECAC attendee category are NOT required to be presenters, session chairs, or exhibiting artists.
For more information on how to apply, please visit our SECAC Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Awards page on our website.
This is an incredible opportunity, so please feel free to pass this along to anyone planning on attending this year's conference who is not a current SECAC member.

SECAC 2023 CALL FOR PAPERS DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 10 (5/3/23, 2:30pm)
Dear SECAC members,
This year's deadline fell during a particularly busy time in the academic year, and we have heard from many of you that you need more time to submit a paper. We have had a fairly robust response to the call for paper proposals so far, but we want everyone to have the opportunity to submit. Therefore, we are extending the deadline for the Call for Papers to Wednesday, May 10, at 11:59pm.
This year is shaping up to be a really stellar conference for SECAC. We have some exciting programming that's on the docket for Richmond! Within the broad theme of Crossroads, the conference will celebrate creative and scholarly research from the fields of art, art history, and design. A central part of this celebration is the annual exhibition of artworks by our members at the Juried Exhibition. This year, we are proud to partner with Virginia Commonwealth University for this cornerstone event, hosting the exhibition in the beautiful 6500 sq ft gallery, Try-me, in Richmond’s uptown arts district. As part of this sponsorship, SECAC is waiving the entry fee for all applicants. The prospectus will be available soon, so please watch your email!
Our 2023 keynote speaker will be Hamilton Glass, famed artist and organizer of the Mending Walls Mural Project. A native of Philadelphia, Glass began his career as an architect before shifting his focus to public art and community engagement. His mural initiative in Richmond is the subject of the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary, Mending Walls: The Documentary. In addition to the keynote, conference attendees are invited to participate in a Saturday walking tour of ten Richmond murals, guided by Glass and his team of artists. Space for the tour is limited: plan to sign up during conference registration.
Additional events, workshops, and sessions are being planned for the conference that highlight the vibrant creative communities of both Richmond and SECAC at large. Stay tuned for more details about this exciting week as it draws nearer!

2023 SECAC session at CAA “Engaged Art: Connections and Communities in the Classroom and Beyond”
What kinds of unique contributions can visual art make to create communities in the classroom and beyond? Incorporating core tenets focusing on decoloniality, combatting institutional racism, and issues of intersectionality and social justice, there is increasing interest in engaging communities by means of visual expression. The advent of numerous terms index this, for example, Eco Art, New Genre Public Art and Social Practice. Interactions are crucial to foster awareness and space for collaborations. However engaged visual culture extends beyond studio practice to art education and art history with related concepts, such as, embodied and experiential learning. Fundamental to each of these instantiations is a focus on the power of civic engagement to experience and cultivate social change. From empowering marginalized communities to redefine museums, to public events providing opportunities to experience ancient technologies, to graduation requirements and university promotion guidelines highlighting community engagement activities, the dynamic and vital role of engaged communities is widely recognized within and beyond the Academy.
Given the myriad possibilities for partnerships among communities, this session asks: How is visual art uniquely positioned to engage communities both inside and outside of the classroom? How have you incorporated local partnerships to both teach students and build community relationships? What worked and what failed? Is community engagement a sustainable curricular format? This session is part of wider cross-disciplinary conversations considering synergies between visual art and culture, and engaged communities.

This year, several institutions from Central Virginia will collaborate to create a dynamic conference, reflective of the rich educational and artistic communities celebrated across the region. Guided by the theme of Crossroads, we consider how, much like Richmond and the country at large, the art world is navigating how best to construct a more thoughtful, inclusive, and sustainable future. By using this theme as our guide, we hope to foster constructive dialogue at the intersections of art, art history, education, and design. The conference will be embedded in the heart of Richmond, with exhibitions, events, programs, and speakers located throughout the city.
I hope you all find time to rest and rejuvenate in these final days of 2022.
Best,
Tracy
